Parallel Session-5

Sustainability and Handloom Traditions of India

Brief Description

The textile sector is a significant contributor to global pollution, accounting for 20% of water pollution, 35% of microplastic waste, and 10% of greenhouse gas emissions. This session focuses on enabling circularity in the textile industry by exploring sustainable practices across the value chain—from production to consumption and disposal.

Aligned with SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), the session will showcase innovations in recycling, sustainable fibers, and traditional crafts. Discussions will also address policy interventions, education, and capacity-building initiatives for creating a circular and sustainable textile industry.

Key Objectives

  • Identify challenges and opportunities in promoting circularity in the textile sector.

  • Share successful practices in recycling, sustainable design, and natural fiber use.

  • Develop recommendations for research, education, and global collaboration in sustainable textiles.

Join us to explore how the textile industry can transform into a sustainable model, balancing economic growth with environmental responsibility.
